HAMILTON man Paul Kraus's successful battle with cancer has inspired him to compile and edit a book detailing the experiences of he and other survivors.
Surviving Cancer: Inspiring Stories of Hope and Healing profiles 28 people and their battle with the disease, including a number from the Hunter.Mr Kraus was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a lung cancer most commonly linked to asbestos exposure, in 1997 and was given little hope by doctors.More than 10 years on, Mr Kraus said he fought the disease with alternative therapies such as meditation, positive visualisation and a dramatic change in diet."It was a radical change in lifestyle and a holistic approach to healing," he said. While the people profiled in the book had different experiences with different forms of cancer, Mr Kraus said they all had one thing in common."They took charge and responsibility over their decisions," he said."They have a sense of self empowerment."Mr Kraus said he knew many people did not survive cancer, but he felt the book was important because provided hope."The goal is to show cancer patients and their families that virtually every type of cancer has been overcome," he said. The book is available from bookshops and online at www.gawler.org.
