Book Club

Like other groups bound by common interests, book clubs are also brought together by a common love: books.

A book club is basically a group of book enthusiasts. It usually offers great opportunities for members to be able to acquire books regularly. It can either be traditional (actual physical group) or online (Internet-based).

Traditional book club

A book club is a group of people who engage in regular discussions of books. Also known as a reading group, a book club is usually composed of book lovers or bookworms who want to actually talk about and listen to other people talk about books they're interested in.

In the early days, a book club would gather up monthly to discuss a particular work or book. A traditional book club still holds traditional book club sessions to this day. Since a traditional book club requires that members gather up once in a while to conduct in-depth discussions on certain books, traditional book club members enjoy a more intimate and personal relationship with the other members. They also benefit from intellectual enlightenment and emotional fulfillment in allowing themselves to delve deeper in great books with other people.

Online book club

Book club can also refer to a place or venue where one can easily borrow or buy books. Such a book club is also called a discount book club.

A discount book club usually operates through the Internet, setting up websites where book lovers can choose books that they want to purchase. By offering superb book purchase deals, book lovers can find a convenient way to acquire books regularly in just a single click.

Besides the ease and efficiency in acquiring books through an online book club, members of online book clubs also benefit from the Internet's wide scope, having access to more books. Online book clubs also enjoy the availability of books anytime and anywhere.

Online book clubs, however, sacrifice the importance of actual social interactions through face to face sit-ins to be able to discuss certain books that the group is interested in.

Finding a book club

Online book clubs are relatively easy to find. Just search the keyword and an array of existing book clubs would come lining up for one to choose. But if you want actual discussions that only traditional book clubs can provide, you can go search for them and do some research. Ask around and browse the Internet. Also, check out various bookstores and libraries. These institutions usually host their own book clubs.
